Wellness

As a physical therapy student in my last year of graduate school, I started to wonder what kind of impact I wanted to make in my community once I had those three letters, DPT, attached to my name.  With a few months left before we are all sent to fend for ourselves in our clinical internships, I’ve decided why not start now?  So, I thought about it, and came to find that not only do I find physical therapy important, but the entire industry of health and wellness supersedes it.

As a future healthcare practitioner, I find mental health, environmental health, and nutrition just as important as physical health.  It is so important that the general public be educated on wellness and prevention of illness.  This is actually what excites me the most!  How is it that such a progressive country should have such great numbers of people with ill health?  Why is it that there are not more funds for preventative health – which can lead to a healthier and more productive nation?

One of the areas I’ve found to be in the limelight recently is nutrition.  On my off-time, I consume media on both ethical choices and optimal health when it comes to food.  I’ve spent countless hours in the kitchen creating dishes that I hope to be both healthy and delicious.  It’s been a running joke that I spend hours in the grocery store reading ingredient lists and looking for the best value.  What average American really has time to do all this?  It’s sad, but many Americans can’t or don’t cook often enough, either because of time or costs, and their health lies in the hands of the convenient and affordable fast food industries.  With that and their busy jobs sitting at a desk for 8 hours, and then being too tired to hit the gym — well, it’s no wonder so many are diagnosed with diabetes or cardiovascular diseases.

So, I’ve decided why not start a blog sharing my ideas and quest on how to live a healthy lifestyle, one that is not solely linked to physical therapy, but to overall wellness.  Stay tuned for more updates!
